The Benchmark Scaffolding team at 1–5 London Wall recently delivered a complex scaffold beam installation to support demolition works on the project.
At the centre of the works was an 18m long, 1.3m deep, 2.9 tonne spine beam spanning over an adjoining property at roof level. Supported via cantilevered sections at either end and set out on a splay, the arrangement required detailed engineering coordination and several weeks of planning to ensure a safe, workable solution within a live commercial environment.
With no suitable space available on site for assembly, the beam was constructed at ground level within the pit lane during a planned out-of-hours window. This allowed the team to complete the build without disrupting ongoing site logistics or delivery movements. The following morning, the beam was craned into position in a single lift, forming part of a bespoke cantilever scaffold arrangement.
Preparation began well in advance, with safety netting installed ahead of the lift. The beam itself was fully boarded and fitted with internal and external handrails prior to lifting, ensuring it was immediately safe for use once in position while final connections were completed and demolition works progressed.
The works were delivered in collaboration with Engage Scaffold Design & Engineering, whose design ensured the cantilever arrangement, load paths and installation methodology were fully resolved ahead of installation.
Described by the Project Director at Midgard as a “meticulously planned installation” and “a thought-out engineering solution – well planned and executed”, the works were carried out without impact to neighbouring properties, site operations or local residents. The installation forms a major step in enabling the next phase of works on site.
